"Don't think about making art..."

“Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” Andy Warhol

Karla Grotting, my teacher since my freshman year of college, shared this ditty on her Instagram this morning. Awfully appropriate as I work on my new piece again before our big showing. Just get it done, Molly! Right?

Along with working with the Majas at Zorongo on our pieces, it's been a pleasure and a good reminder for me to watch my teacher, Karla, work on myself and my cast on her new premier, which just opened and closed this weekend at Rhythmically Speaking 2017. A good reminder, because I see my teacher as a confident artist who I look up to because I truly believe she has something to say, and also think she really knows what she is doing.

And yet, here she is, reminding herself to stop putting down her own art. My own beautiful teacher and mentor, being vulnerable and open with her dancers, is reminding me that even amazingly talented artists have doubts about their own work. No matter how many years of experience anyone might have, it is humbling to know that those that I look up to also have doubt and fear about their own art. And, they face those fears, and keep doing what they do everyday.

So, stepping into my rehearsal today, I reminded myself that even my mentors and teachers and role models feel the way I feel, and that I can succeed despite these doubts. I'm excited to share my piece soon!

And to give a taste of my piece, here is what I used as the genesis of my new work...
